The last time the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup, the country barely knew what football was. In 1994, the tournament arrived as a polite curiosity — a successful event that introduced millions of Americans to the sport, but one that didn't fundamentally change the cultural landscape.
In 2026, everything is different.
A Changed American Football Scene
Major League Soccer has grown from 10 clubs in 1996 to 29 in 2026. American players now regularly feature in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Liga MX and Serie A. The USMNT reached the Round of 16 in Qatar 2022, defeating Iran with a performance that made the back pages in places that would never have covered US Soccer before.
The 2026 World Cup arrives with the USA as a genuine contender to reach the quarter-finals or beyond — not just as the polite host, but as a team with the talent to justify high expectations.
Group D: The Draw
The United States were placed into Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye. It's a manageable draw on paper, but every match at a home World Cup carries enormous pressure.
Paraguay have qualified for 8 World Cups and reached the quarter-finals twice. They'll be organised, hard to break down, and determined to make the USA's home crowd uncomfortable. Australia have shown at successive tournaments — 2006 (Round of 16), 2022 (Round of 16) — that they can cause upsets. The Socceroos play an increasingly technical game. Türkiye — known internationally as Turkey — finished third at the 2002 World Cup and have consistently been one of UEFA's most competitive sides without the recognition they deserve. The Home Advantage
Playing in front of home crowds at three different American stadiums will be an extraordinary experience for the players. But home advantage at a World Cup is a double-edged sword — the expectation can become suffocating.
The 1994 US team was relieved to have no expectation. The 2026 squad will have everything.
The Opportunity
If the USA win Group D and advance through the Round of 32, they could potentially avoid the tournament's heavyweights until the quarter-finals. The 48-team format gives more cushion before meeting the elite.
A quarter-final appearance would be the USA's best World Cup result since their 1930 semi-final (which was also their debut). Getting there on home soil would be transformational for the sport in America.
