MetLife Stadium: Guide to the World Cup 2026 Final Venue

WC2026 Guide TeamMarch 5, 20267 min read

On July 19, 2026, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host the most-watched single sporting event in human history. The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. Here's everything you need to know about the venue and how to make the most of being there.

The Stadium

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010 and has a permanent capacity of 82,500, with the ability to be configured for larger crowds. It's the home of both the New York Giants and New York Jets of the NFL, making it one of the most-used major stadiums in the United States.

FIFA is expected to expand the capacity for the Final with temporary additions — the actual 2026 Final crowd could approach or exceed 90,000.

The stadium has no roof — but the New York / New Jersey summer is warm and the open-air setting adds to the spectacle. For a July evening kick-off at 3:00 PM ET, expect warm but comfortable conditions.

Getting There: NJ Transit

This is the most important logistical fact about the MetLife Final: the stadium is not in New York City. It is in East Rutherford, New Jersey, 8 miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Best option: NJ Transit Train

The MetLife Sports Complex station sits right outside the stadium gates. Trains run from Penn Station (New York) — the journey takes approximately 30 minutes. On match days, NJ Transit runs express services and the frequency increases dramatically. Expect trains every 5–10 minutes in the two hours before kick-off.

Buy a NJ Transit ticket in advance via the NJ Transit app or at Penn Station. On World Cup Final day, last-minute ticket queues at Penn Station will be enormous.

Avoid driving

Unless you're staying within walking distance of the stadium, driving is strongly discouraged. The parking situation at MetLife will be overwhelmed on Final day. NJ Transit is the correct answer.

Where to Stay

In Manhattan: The most logical choice for most visitors. NJ Transit gets you to MetLife in 30 minutes. Manhattan has thousands of hotels at every price point.
  • Luxury: The Standard High Line, The Bowery Hotel, Hudson Yards hotels
  • Mid-range: Pod Hotels (Times Square or 51st), citizenM New York Times Square
  • Budget: YOTEL New York, Pod 39

Book as far in advance as possible — Manhattan hotels for July 2026 World Cup Final week have been filling since 2024. Expect rates 3–5× normal.

Near the stadium: Limited options but less transit stress. The Meadowlands area has hotels (DoubleTree, Fairfield, Courtyard) within a short shuttle/walk of the stadium.

Fan Zones

NYC will host official FIFA Fan Zones — large outdoor viewing areas with screens, food, merchandise and entertainment. Locations are typically in Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Hudson Yards. These are free to attend and become the social heart of the tournament for non-ticket holders.

For Final day, the Fan Zones in Manhattan will fill up hours before kick-off. Get there early.

The Experience

The World Cup Final at MetLife will be unlike anything since the 2016 Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium or the 1994 World Cup Final (coincidentally also at MetLife's predecessor, Giants Stadium). With 48 nations in the tournament, the diaspora spread across the New York / New Jersey metropolitan area will make the Final atmosphere electric for whichever two nations reach it.
