World Cup 2026: Which Is the Group of Death?

WC2026 Guide TeamMarch 20, 20265 min read

With 12 groups instead of the traditional 8, the 2026 World Cup group stage is more balanced than ever. But "balanced" doesn't mean every group is equal. Some nations face a far tougher path to the knockout rounds than others. Here's our ranking.

The Strongest Groups

Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland

Brazil as the headline act alongside Morocco — who reached the semi-finals in 2022 — makes Group C arguably the most fearsome for the outsiders. Haiti and Scotland will have to play the best football of their careers just to get a result.

Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

England vs Croatia is a rematch of the 2018 semi-final. Two of Europe's most technical nations in the same group, with Ghana (quarter-finalists in 2010) adding quality. Panama are the relative minnows but will be fired up.

Group I: France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq

France (2018 champions, 2022 runners-up) share a group with Senegal — the 2022 quarter-finalists who beat England — and Norway, one of the most dangerous teams in European football. Iraq face an extremely tough group.

The Most Open Groups

Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye

The host nation USA against three solid but beatable opponents. A thrilling group with everything to play for, especially given the home atmosphere advantage.

Group J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan

The defending champions are the clear favourites, but Algeria are no pushover and Austria have been impressive in recent European campaigns.

Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

Netherlands are the big name, but Japan (Round of 16 in 2018 and 2022), Sweden and a competitive Tunisia side make this more unpredictable than it looks.

The "Group of Death" Verdict

Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland.

Brazil bring 22 World Cup appearances and five titles. Morocco brought Africa's finest-ever World Cup performance in 2022. Two genuine knockout contenders sharing a group, with only two teams advancing automatically. Whoever finishes second in Group C is likely to be a higher-ranked nation exiting in the Round of 32 than any other group second-place team.
