With 16 cities spread across three countries, choosing where to base yourself for the 2026 World Cup is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Here's our honest ranking for football fans.
Tier 1 — Can't Miss
1. New York / New Jersey (MetLife Stadium)
It's hosting the Final. That alone makes it unmissable. Manhattan's energy during a World Cup is incomparable — fans from every nation, every language, every colour jersey filling Times Square, Central Park and every bar in the city. Transport via NJ Transit is easy. Hotels are expensive but available everywhere.
2. Mexico City (Estadio Azteca)
The Azteca is the most storied stadium in world football. Two previous World Cup finals. Diego Maradona's Hand of God. The altitude (2,250m) adds to the mystique. Mexico City's food scene — from street tacos to Pujol — is world-class, and the atmosphere in the neighbourhoods of Roma, Condesa and Coyoacán is electric.
3. Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
The most technologically advanced stadium in the tournament. Indoor, climate-controlled, stunning architecture. MARTA rail drops you right outside. Atlanta's food scene along the BeltLine and the city's energy make it a standout host.
Tier 2 — Excellent Value
4. Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium)
SoFi is futuristic and beautiful. The problem is transport — LA's car culture means getting there requires planning. Do it right (Metro + shuttle) and you'll have a great time, with Koreatown, Little Tokyo and the beach all within reach.
5. Vancouver (BC Place)
Canada's most beautiful city — mountains, ocean, sushi, Stanley Park. BC Place is central and easily reached by SkyTrain. Vancouver is exceptionally safe and easy to navigate. Slightly smaller capacity but the atmosphere will be passionate.
6. Dallas / Arlington (AT&T Stadium)
The biggest stadium in the tournament. The retractable roof and AC make Texas heat a non-issue. Arlington's Entertainment District is purpose-built for events. Texas BBQ and the Fort Worth Stockyards make for unforgettable off-match experiences.
Tier 3 — Great if You're Based There
7–16. Remaining Cities
Seattle, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto, Monterrey and Guadalajara are all excellent host cities with their own unique charms. If you're choosing based on flights and budget, any of these will deliver a memorable World Cup experience.
Bottom Line
For the ultimate fan experience: New York → Atlanta → Mexico City, in that order. For value and atmosphere: Vancouver or Seattle on the West Coast. For food and culture: Mexico City is in a class of its own.
